A self-taught composer and sound designer from Denmark, Jesper Kyd Jakobson was one of the founders of Zyrinx in Copenhagen, Denmark. The first games released by the company included Sub-Terrania and Red Zone for the Sega Genesis, and Scorcher for the Sega Saturn, all of which featured Kyd's work.

In the years following Scorcher's release in 1996, Kyd contracted himself to Bioware's MDK2 and Interplay's Messiah. In this time, Zyrinx dissolved after their parent publisher filed for bankruptcy. Company members reconvened in Copenhagen and reformed as IO Interactive in 1998 under Reto-Moto. Kyd, however, had begun his own studio, Nano Studios, as a freelancer.

Since 2000, Kyd has assisted multiple studios as a composer and sound designer. Despite leaving the studio in 1998, IO Interactive contracted Kyd to score Hitman: Codename 47 in 2000, and has scored the studio's releases up to Kane and Lynch: Dead Men in 2007.

Kyd's work is best recognised through orchestral influences and digital implementation. The only notable exception to this style was Darksiders II, which Kyd composed without any digital rendering.
